[Super Typhoon Hagibis Relief Mission]
2019.10.15
Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is providing humanitarian assistance to the victims of Typhoon Hagibis, the 19th typhoon to hit Japan in 2019.
On October 12, 2019, the massive Super Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in Japan. With unprecedented amounts of rainfall and violent winds, the typhoon has caused destruction across a widespread area including flooding and landslides.
As of Oct. 15, at least 67 people have died, 19 are missing, and over 216 are injured. Additionally, more than 230,000 people have evacuated their homes and over 133,000 households are without power. These victims will require support and essentials during this recovery period.
PWJ is conducting search-and-rescue operations with rescue dogs and medical personnel. As our needs assessment continues, PWJ will provide essential items such as foods, water, clothes and other emergency relief items to the victims of the typhoon.
This project will assist those who have lost their homes and those attempting to recover their homes by caring for their immediate emergency needs. As our needs assessment continues, PWJ will continue to provide for the needs of the victims as the situation develops.
The PWJ rescue team, which includes medical personnel, is in Nagano city, Nagano prefecture, helping hospitalized patients from Nagano’s Rehabilitation Center which is flooded and out of electricity. We have transported three patients to Nagano Community Hospital and Shinshu Medical Center, both within the prefecture.
Another hospital, Sanikukai Clinic (In Toyonomachi, Nagano prefecture), is still out of electricity, and many patients are waiting to be transported to safer hospitals. PWJ will continue to help these patients meet their needs. However, the flooding damage is still apparent with muddy roads making it difficult to conduct operations.
